Champion97's picture

This is a step up for Joyce, finally, a fight for Joyce which isn't a joke. Jennings is not necessarily better than Ustinov and Stiverne, based on what they achieved earlier in their careers, I don't think Jennings would have beaten a 2014 Stiverne, but although Jennings is past prime, and his form hasn't been good, he is not old like Stiverne and Ustinov, doesn't have as much damage, he isn't young and fresh, at 34, been stopped twice, but Stiverne's first loss to Wilder was more damaging than Jennings's stoppage losses put together. Jennings isn't coming off a layoff, he lost to Oscar Rivas 6 months back, got stopped in the last round, but for 11 rounds, that was a close fight. This fight partly depends on Jennings's mentality, if he shows up confident he can win, does what he did against Rivas, tries his best to use his reach, this will be an interesting fight.

Prediction,

I think Joyce will struggle with Jennings in the early rounds, he is a slow starter, he isn't illusive, he is stationary, is relentless, hits hard, and usually dominates the fight, once he's in range, but Jennings has 4 inches of reach on Joyce, has a very good jab, if he uses that, moves, changes direction, keeps it basic, he can definitely give Joyce problems, and I think he will.

I think for 4 rounds, Joyce will be frustrated, he will walk into Jennings's jab, get stopped in his tracks, he will be the aggressor, and if Jennings stops moving, and Joyce gets past his jab, Joyce will go on the attack and have success, but I think Jennings might be ahead after 4 rounds.

I think Joyce will apply more pressure in the mid rounds, he will have to take shots to land them, will have to walk through Jennings's right hand as well as his jab, but the problem for Jennings is he might not be able to hurt or discourage Joyce, so Joyce can keep moving forward, making him work, and once Joyce has got on the inside, can back Jennings up to the ropes, it's Joyce's fight.

I think after 8 rounds, Joyce will probably be slightly ahead, will have taken over, Jennings will have been competitive every round, but having been made to fight Joyce's fight, been pressured, he will be fading, and Joyce will stop him in the late rounds, maybe in 10, with accumulation, when Jennings is running on empty, Joyce will hit him clean relentlessly, in a high volume, might drop Jennings a couple of times, and he'll stop him.

This could be a good learning fight for Joyce, Jennings is the perfect opponent for a prospect like Joyce, who has had an easy career so far. I expect Joyce to win this by stoppage, if he is a world level fighter, he should win well, and if he does, he should step up in his next fight, because he should have had a fight like this 6 months ago, has no time to waste, has to take a risk, at his age, so provided he wins this and is impressive, dominates, he should fight a top 15, ideally a top 10 opponent this year.
