In this internationally televised title bout from Glascow, Scotland, Lightweight Champion Jim Watt defended his title against rising Sean O'Grady. This was the first title shot for O'Grady, and his inexperience showed the entire bout. Watt's jabs and power punches created eye cuts on O'Grady, who fought back well but whose corner spent the majority of the bout working feverishly on the cuts. Despite frequent combinations and body shots by both fighters, by holding and 'mixing heads' in clinches Watt did everything possible to make this a downright bloody affair, and got away with as much as he could in his hometown arena. In the end, O'Grady was bleeding badly, and the referee had to stop this fight in the twelfth round.

"Scotland's Jim Watt, whose most effective weapon became a head butt, stopped American challenger Sean O'Grady in 12 rounds Saturday to retain his WBC world lightweight title. French referee Raymond Balderouy halted the scheduled 15 round fight at 2:37 of the 12th round because of a bloody gash on O'Grady's forehead which was caused by a butt in the 10th round. O'Grady seemed to be adding to his list of 65 inside-the-distance victories when he opened up a bad cut on the side of Watt's left eye with a powerful left hook. Doctor James Shea inspected the injury and gave Watt his lifeline with his decision to continue. In addition, Watt had a constantly bleeding nose and small cuts over his left and right eyes. After clashing heads with Watt, O'Grady backed into his corner and complained to Balderouy as the blood began flowing down his face. While arguing, O'Grady made the mistake of turning his head and Watt raced in to land three stiff punches to the challenger's face as the bell sounded. The blood continued to pour down O'Grady's face through the next two rounds and the ring physician was called in to check on the cut on two occasions. O'Grady was allowed to continue, however, until the referee stopped the bout when the challenger from Oklahoma City was virtually blinded by his own blood." -United Press International.

Irking the religious tensions in Glasgow by posing with the Catholic Glasgow Celtic soccer club rather than the Protestant Glasgow Rangers soccer club, while promoting the fight, the O'Grady camp began receiving death threats from a Protestant extremist group leading up to the bout.

Post fight comments
"The butt was unfortunate but I don't think it was deliberate. We are not going to squeal. We got a fair crack of the whip. As soon as Sean's wounds heal, we would like a return to settle it once and for all." -Pat O'Grady, Sean's father and manager
"If I don't see Mr. and Mrs. O'Grady again it won't worry me at all. Their behavior was impossible. It seemed to me that they wanted to create irritation and controversy." -Promoter Mickey Duff
"I had my stitches done first and then went to see him. He was very gracious, everything he said was nice." -Jim Watt, upon meeting up with O'Grady in the same hospital for treatment.

O'Grady rarely fought tough competition and when he did he usually was KO'ed or his father stopped the fight. That's why this write-up says "O'Grady's inexperience showed" even though this was The Bubblegum Kid's 75th fight.

rorschach's picture

Round 1: Very much a feeling out round, Watt probing with the jab, O'grady doing the same. Around the 2 minute mark BG (Bubble Gum) lands a solid jab, seconds later Watt responds with his own stiff jab followed by a hard left hand to BG's jaw. BG immediately tries to reciprocate by jumping on Watt to make it a brawl, but the savvy Watt keeps him at bay with movement and a good jab. Watt circle's left probing then sticking the jab, finds a opening and spears a left hand high to O'Grady's forehead. BG finally gets insider without paying and lands good left and right hooks to the body, and finishes up with a hook upstairs. With 10 seconds left in the round Watt is now stalking BG, and lands a glancing 1-2. Watt lands another jab, BG counters with a jab to the body at the bell. 10-9 Watt.

Round 2: Starts the same as the first, Watt circling and jabbing O'Grady trying to get inside. O'Grady finds his range and unleashes a barrage of brawling like punches some of which do land, Watt takes them well and moves out of danger landing a light right hand jab on the way out. Watt lands the jab, BG double jabs and lands the second one solid. Watt controlling the round with his jab, and slamming a left hand into BG's face when he moves into range. Watt now starting to craftily use his head as a weapon when Sean comes inside. Watt stuns BG with a 4 punch combo, and is now landing his stiff south paw jab at will, and countering O'Grady by timing his jab with lead lefts. BG tries to attack to little effect as his nose starts to bleed to end the round. 10-9 Watt.

Round 3: The first minute and a half is all Watt, landing his jab to the head and body, and nailing BG with the left. The crowd now is chanting EASY! EASY! and honestly it has been easy work for Watt up to this point. The Champion looks like a master boxer this round, landing what he wants when he wants, with the challenger barely laying a glove on him. Dominate round for Watt. 10-9 Watt.

Round 4: And O'Grady needs to get to work, he needs to try to make something happen because this fight is getting away from him, the last 2 rounds he has looked lost. BG finally does by deciding to go wade through the jab, and starts landing bombs, one of which knocks Watt back at least a step. Now he's brawling landing hard shots to the body in the clinch, Watt gets the break resets and gets back to pumping that hard right jab in O'Grady's face, discouraging him for the time being. Now Watt steps in with a good 1-2 that has BG moving, O'Grady has a minute thirty to seal this round, but right now it's business as usual for Watt. Jim lands a solid uppercut, Sean gets inside and lands well to the body again. Watt in command until the final bell when O'Grady lands a big lunging 1-2. Close round but I think O'Grady did enough to win this round. 10-9 O'Grady.

Round 5: not much going for the first minute until Watt tried to land to the body, falls short and is answered by a good combo upstairs by O'Grady. Watt again lands good jabs, with Sean coming up short now with lunging shots. Watt lands a hook and jabs off it both landing. BG partially lands a lunging 1-2, Watt jabs, jabs and is nearly caught by a hard right hand. Sean goes downstairs with a straight right, Jim lands his jab finds a opening then steps in and lands a hard lead left. Watt jabs, jabs, O'Grady goes downstairs again with hard shots to the body. Close round but I think Watt did just a little more. 10-9 Watt.

Round 6: Watt comes out landing the jab again, which sets up a hard lead left to the head of BG. Another lead left by the champion, O'Grady just isn't doing enough in these rounds. O'Grady works his way in and lands a decent right hand to the head, then goes to the body before landing in the clinch. O'Grady lands a nice left hook to the champions body, Watt lands a glancing lead left and follows up with a right hook that also doesn't land very solid. Now O'Grady is working moving in and working the champion to the ropes with powerful shots upstairs and down. Good left hook to the body by the challenger, Watt steps in and lands a good jab his left is a little short, bu then lands another good jab. O'Grady lands a hook and right hand to the head, he didn't get all of it but they did land. And again by O'Grady good pressure by him now, by far his best round. 10-9 O'Grady.

Round 7: O'Grady looks confident now moving and dancing well and landing his own decent jab, until he slows down and Watt steps in and lands a good lead left. Watt pops him with the jab, Sean has stopped moving again and looks to rush in to mix it up which won him the last round. Watt countering well again every time BG tries to get inside, stopping O'Grady in his tracks with good 1-2's. Watt steps in range misses the jab but lands a good followup left to the head of the challenger, BG finishes the exchange with a partially landed left hook to the head. O'Gardy lands a good right hand, Watt tries to counter and is met with another hook to the head from O'Grady. O'Grady lands a good 3 punch combo that has Watt moving, Sean follows but ends up getting himself cornered and nailed with a 1-2 by Watt. BG attacks again rushing in, he didn't land much but did score. Watt cups a hook to BG's head that causes Sean to stumble off balance but not because he was hurt, because he comes back and lands a good right hand to Watt's face. Have to give that round to O'Grady though it was closer. 10-9 O'Grady.

Round 8: O'Grady coming on now, landing much better. Watt getting in some good shots as well, but O'Grady doing the better right now.Watt steps in but misses with the 1-2, but is now getting back to sticking his jab. Sean lands a right, Watt finishes strong. I'd have to give this round to O'Grady that's 3 in a row. 10-9 O'Grady.

rorschach's picture

Round 9: The champion looks more composed and is coming out and landing a good jab. O'Grady isn't getting much done until he lands a solid uppercut. Not much going on for a stretch, then BG lunges in and lands a right hand. A bad cut opens vertically over Watt's eye, the ref halts the fight to have the doc look, and allows waits corner to clean it off and press it with a towel to get the bleeding stopped, the fight continues. O'Grady has Watt in trouble now, Watt on his bike, Sean in pursuit not much is landing for either fighter, but O'Grady is landing better with what is landing. Unbelievably from how this fight started out O'Grady has won 4 straight rounds on my card and has taken the lead. 10-9 O'Grady.

rorschach's picture

Round 10: Out for round 10 and almost immediately BG lands a uppercut. Watt is a mess, with that terrible vertical cut above the eye, one in this eyebrow, and his nose is bleeding badly, O'Grady looks fine besides some swelling. Watt lands a good jab, and another keeping O'Grady at bay, now Watt is really using the top of his head when O'Grady gets in close when he can't keep him away with the jab. Now Watt has O'Grady along the ropes and strafes him with a decent left, good comeback round so far for Watt. O'Grady for some crazy reason puts his hands down looks at the ref and motions with his glove about something (probably Watt using the top of his head as a battering ram and opening a huge split on Sean's forehead) the ref doesn't really acknowledge him, and while his head is turned Watt lunges in and cracks O'Grady with a left that has Sean back in the corner. Unreal they call a TKO win for Watt when the gash that was the reason was from a clear butt. 10-9 Watt.

rorschach's picture

Round 11: The corner of O'Grady can do nothing to stem the flow of blood from Sean's forehead, and he's wearing a bloody mask was soon as Watt lands his first jab. Watt hasn't done much but jab this round, but O'Grady can do nothing but defend because he can't see. This fight should have been stopped immediately after that butt and went to the scorecards, absolutely unreal the French ref called a TKO on this. 10-9 Watt.

rorschach's picture

Apparently the ref somehow didn't see the butt (he must legit be blind) so it was ruled by a punch which explains the TKO, but come on, I've never seen a punch by anyone open up a huge gash high up on someone's forehead. That's clearly blunt force trauma with something very hard like the top of a man's head, now the decent power punching but nothing spectacular punches like Jim Watt's.
