Jarrett Hurd vs Erislandy Lara
WBA 154lb champion, Cuba's Erislandy Lara, and IBF 154lb champion, Maryland's Jarrett Hurd, put their belts on the line in a unification fight.
Lara starts well, beats Hurd to the punch, moves well, although Hurd, able to land the heavier shots.
In rounds 3-6, Hurd comes forward, but struggles for accuracy, and is hit with clean shots. Lara lands the sharper, cleaner shots, maybe with as much velocity as well, at times. Hurd struggles to find the range, Lara keeps him at distance. Hurd closes the gap, attacks the body, makes Lara work, but struggles to do good work of his own.
Rounds 7-10 are very close, Hurd having a good 9th, Lara, with a good 10th. Hurd is the aggressor, hammers away at the body, lands some good shots, uses his jab, but Lara, landing with the eye catching shots, and attacking Hurd with great uppercuts in round 10.
Lara and Hurd slug it out in the championship rounds, and just when it looks like more of the same, even stuff, aggression vs technical skill, Hurd swings the fight in his favour by hurting Lara late in round 12, landing a great uppercut, and then a great left hook to drop the Cuban.
Both fighters understandably think they have won what is a very close fight, most people seem to think it could go either way, but Hurd, with the late knockdown.
It is desperately close as all 3 judges score a 1 point margin, and not all to the same fighter, but Hurd wins a very close split decision, winning the WBA title.
