There should be 5 judges rather than the traditional 3.

I haven't seen the fight so I can't score it because I'm in Germany and there is no boxnation here. I read an article about the fight on the daily mail, it says 'Saul Alvarez escapes with split decision win over Lara'. I can see you disagree with the decision, was it robbery? If so then he needs to to rematch him, one thing I do know is that Alvarez swung a lot of right hands that hit nothing but air in the early rounds. I have said before that there should be more official judges, if it was a fair decision then Lara should rematch Trout.

albertocastany's picture

I wouldn't call it a robbery, but the majority of the people favor Lara. A sample of just 3 persons to score the official result is not significant.

Ended up posting about 6 comments even though I intended to post just one.

I thought that this fight was built up to be a great fight that could be a contender of the year fight, I really do think the whole theme was all about Canelo, I think the reason people thought it would be great is because Lara is often associated with his great battle against Alfredo Angulo, I think the reason it was so talked about and intriguing is because how much of a threat the arrogant and slightly disrespectful Cuban was due to how he had beaten Trout more comfortably than Alvarez and what happened to Canelo against Mayweather really made you worry if you were a Canelo fan, I think it was all about a very tricky mission for a fired up Canelo to beat the annoying Cuban.

As for how the fight went I was not that overall impressed by either, I thought that Alvarez was very inaccurate a lot of the time and he was made to look far more active than he really was by how inactive Lara was. I thought Lara showed great skill as he timed his combinations well, he sometimes threw in single punches but sometimes put a couple of shots together, Canelo was made to look very clumsy as he was often tagged clean, he was blatantly out boxed in rounds 1,3 and 10 in my opinion and Lara seemed far more composed, he seemed to control the range, I do think that Alvarez could have done better and if he hadn't have felt any particular way about Lara then he would have stopped him with those body shots, I think his pre fight promises to the fans and also the Mayweather fight memories may have piled on the mental pressure and he didn't look relaxed as soon as he was hit, he looked angry and as if he didn't want to have a boxing fight but more just a pub brawl, he seemed to swing the right hand wildly. I remember Lara's advisor saying that when Erislandy really wants something he proves how much he wants it by going out there and getting it, well I certainly didn't see any evidence of that, he seemed to be deterred by Canelo even though he wasn't being hit clean, shots that hit the guard seemed to bother him and when he brilliantly made Canelo miss badly with some right hands at the end of round 5 he seemed bothered by the missed punches and he threw nothing back, Lara looked very fatigued in many rounds in a very slow paced fight, I thought he was not only inactive but he was on the back foot when he needed not to be, Alvarez looked far stronger and fresher and braver in there and looked as if he wanted the fight much more, he seemed frustrated in the first 3 rounds but I saw a more calm Canelo in the middle and later rounds as he realised he should just land a couple of body shots, chase Lara back which he he does easily and smile at Lara as if to say "come on man, chase me, hit me back", Lara is a brilliant, sharp, accurate counter puncher but he refuses to be first and won't throw unless Canelo throws, I think that is why the later rounds carried so little action, Canelo knew what Lara was trying to do and Lara just wanted to counter punch but he couldn't do that without Canelo throwing anything, personally I thought Lara won the fight because Canelo didn't land enough punches and got hit with too many, he should have jumped on Lara in my opinion and thrown more punches, he was out landed in the majority of the rounds and he was made to look ordinary, he lost in my opinion but I think he could have done better, I find 117-111 for Alvarez a little hard to understand, I would have no trouble understanding that score the other way, I say this because Lara had more big rounds, I can easily see the fight going either way and also 8-4 either way. I thought this was a disappointing fight overall.

He did not clearly win. It was a close fight. I would say 117-111 is too wide of a margin even if it went either way. There's a fine line between boxing and running. Lara was doing both last night. He didn't mount an effective enough offense to win that fight.

albertocastany's picture

A close fight that cannot depend on the judgement of only 3 people. People will argue Lara was backpedaling, while other will argue that Canelo was missing horribly and just hitting Lara's elbows.
The sample responsible for the official result is not relevant to what the majority of the population scored. 5 Judges should be the number of people providing of the official scores in boxing. These would help a lot to reduce controversies.

This is a reply specific to the 5 judges comment. I absolutely, 100% agree! It's feasible and reasonable. This should become the norm.

In my opinion it was a complete robbery. Canelo looked bad swinging rights that either missed or Lara caught on his elbows. Personally I hope there isn't a rematch as there will be the same people judging and the same people promoting. Lara proved all he needed to last night and proved he was the better man.

Well Alvarez whiffs out another BS decision. When Lara fought and engaged in action he clearly won 7 rounds. The only reason I gave Alvarez 5 rounds was because Lara stopped throwing. All judges should be shot, fucking despicable when the money fighter always gets the nod.

Absolutely right, I've always said that's the problem with boxing
