WBC Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. becomes just the second fighter to end his career at 49-0 when he pitches a shutout over Andre Berto. After being taken to school for ten rounds, Berto starts talking to Mayweather, who responds until Referee Kenny Bayless has to order both men to stop the chatter. Mayweather puts a hurting on Berto in the twelfth round but coasts to the finish line rather than finish him off. Following the bout, Mayweather states that he plans to stay true to his word and retire from boxing undefeated.

What a shame this is happening.

Champion97's picture

Prediction,

I think it is unknowable and unreliable as to whether Mayweather will try and stop Berto or whether he will carry him and box technically, being lazy and showing he can do whatever he likes because he is 'TBE', my prediction is a very wide, one sided, a country ion from questionable unanimous decision, 119-109, 119-109, 119-109, I think it will be very simply a case of Floyd doing nothing for the final 3 minutes, after schooling, beating up, humiliating, and more than out classing an extremely over matched Andre Berto for 11 rounds. One thing is for sure and that is that Mayweather has far more to lose than Berto, and so, the pressure really is on him.

albertocastany's picture

Not sure why I even bothered to score it. It's sad he finishes his career with a fight with such a reduced challenge. Let's crossfingers for this to not be the end.

Champion97's picture

This was a poor performance from Floyd Mayweather. Andre Berto did himself proud, he gave Mayweather a much tougher fight than I thought he would. The tactics from Mayweather were poor, he clearly had no idea what kind of fighter Berto was, and that is why Berto was right in this fight and made it quite close at times. I thought the jab of Berto was impressive, I really expected Mayweather to be able to make Andre fall short with more of them, but he got hit with the jab far, far too often, he really struggled with the relentlessness of Berto. Berto didn't come into this fight trying to perform the way Pacquiao did, because despite the hype, Pacquiao was comfortably beaten, he followed in the footsteps of Marcos Maidana and went in there with nothing to lose but everything to gain, the over hand right worked well for him at times. Obviously Berto didn't succeed in giving Mayweather a close fight the way Maidana did, but he did succeed in giving him a competitive fight the way Maidana did. Mayweather showed great timing on his punches as usual when he could be bothered to throw any punches, and he started off brilliantly, he also looked great in the closing stages of the fight, he really did want to stop Berto, but it was too little, too late in terms of stopping Berto. The biggest problem for Berto was that he could never anticipate what Floyd was going to do next, he was very poor defensively. The jab of Mayweather was good to the body throughout, and his jab was far better than that of his opponent, but Berto used his jab a lot more often, Berto did punch himself out, and he had nothing left in the last couple of rounds, but for the majority of the fight, Floyd was proven not to be one to work for 3 minutes per round, and just did not work hard enough. I was routing for Berto, and he did so much better than I thought he would, but in too many rounds the gulf in class was apparent, and Mayweather was landing the cleaner punches, and more of them.

In terms of scoring, I don't like 120-108 one bit, I think it is ridiculous, this fight may have been one sided, but nowhere near one sided enough to be a shutout. Mayweather won this fight, but by a maximum of 8 points, Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld were spot on, 117-111 and 118-110, no problem with that. A shutout is a very emphatic score, it suggests a fighter is not in the fight, if judges keep giving fighters who have as much success as Berto as few as 0 rounds in fights this competitive, then this impressive score will mean less when it actually occurs, Berto made a good 4 of those rounds potential rounds for him, and he made Mayweather very uncomfortable for the majority of the fight, no way, in a million years does a fighter who loses a shutout manage to do that.

I honestly think Berto gave Mayweather a closer fight than Pacquiao did, Mayweather may have hut Berto more, but that is only because Berto made him have to like Pacquiao did not. Andre gave Mayweather a tougher night than Guerrero, Alvarez, Hatton or Marquez, I think that is something to be proud of. This was not a good way for Mayweather to finish his career, he probably didn't need to even have the fight, once he had beaten Pacquiao in a very surprisingly one sided fight, he had nothing to prove any more. Andre Berto deserves so much credit for his performance in this fight.

I thought the difference between pac fight and berto fight was that berto was more steadily in the fight but round by round while pacquiao completley shut down down in the begining and down the stretch run. Manny was able to about 3 rounds because he is alot better then berto, also floyd didn't run as much in those rounds, which hurts floyds chances to win. lol... mayweather nearly lost round 7 here cuz he was being lazy, but I thought he won it still. He is 38, his hands are as brittle as ever, he can retire, I am upset that he didn't get a stoppage but it is good for the reputation of Berto's chin. There are a few young guys that could give floyd some hell and when you look at Unlce Roger (did you guys roger's shirt, btw!) floyd is relatively unscathed, but still washed up.

Champion97's picture

I agree, the situation is that he secured the plan in his mind after beating Canelo that he would hang up the gloves in September of 2015, and ever since then, he has not let go of this idea, I think he is too stubborn to be talked into a final fight, at least he won't decide to for a bit, I think after round 11 in the Pacquiao fight he just sat down in his stool and thought "aah, finally over, horrid year last year, beaten Pacquiao finally, I must be respected, now let's just cruise this last round, and then take an easy 49th fight and get the heyll outta there".
