George Groves vs Chris Eubank Jr
WBA super middleweight world champion, George Groves, takes part in the semi-final of the World Boxing Super Series tournament, defends his title against slight favourite, Chris Eubank Jr.
The fight starts off tentatively, Groves makes better use of the ring, doesn't let Eubank get into range, lands the odd shot, and ties Eubank up when he tries to respond. Eubank lands nothing clean and is caught going forward, and Groves's jab looks to dictate the fight. Eubank manages to land the right hand a couple of times, bothers Groves slightly, but Groves lands his jab cleanly. Groves hesitates to throw in round 4, but does the cleaner work, Eubank ends the round well, lands a clean left hand, hurts Groves slightly.
Eubank lands a hard left to the jaw in round 5, both fighters land the jab, Groves, countering, Eubank, aggressive. Eubank swings and misses in round 6, and Groves overpowers a frustrated Eubank, Groves controls with his jab, and defends brilliantly. Groves lands the 1, 2 in round 7, Eubank swings and misses a lot, and late in the round, he seems tired, swings himself to the canvas. Eubank slows down in round 8, and late in the round, Groves lands a great counter right hand, and a flush left hook.
Eubank is aggressive in round 9, Groves struggles to let the shots go, lands a couple, but is outworked and bullied, Eubank lands a couple of good shots, but can't get through with a sustained attack. In round 10, Groves lands a flush right, left, right 3 punch sequence, Eubank falls, seems to get dropped, but the ref calls it a slip.
In round 11, Groves lands a brilliant counter right to the chin as Eubank swings, Eubank tries to respond, but doesn't land anything significant. Groves lands a good left hook as Eubank rushes in, and makes Eubank miss again. Eubank goes for the KO in round 12, but Groves is smart, doesn't take unnecessary risks, but when they clinch, Groves sustains what is clearly a major shoulder injury, Eubank lands his first sequence of hard punches, but he can't put Groves down as the fight goes the full 12.
Groves gets a comfortable UD win, winning by wide margins on 2 of the cards, defending his world title, advances to the final of the tournament.
Groves claimed he had scored a couple of legitimate knockdowns during the fight that the referee missed.
Eubanks Sr admitted after the fight that his son had lost, Jr claimed he thought he had won, but as good as admitted he underestimated Groves.
