More:

After pulling out of a fight with IBF and WBO Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko in the summer, David Haye instead travels to Germany to challenge WBA Champion Nikolay Valuev for a piece of the title. The former Cruiserweight Champion wins the majority of the rounds simply by bouncing a few power shots off the dome of the Russian giant. With only a minute left in a dull fight, Haye suddenly comes to life, blasting Valuev with a combination to the head and wobbling the champion sideways into the ropes. Haye fails to get the knockout but shockingly gets the win from the judges on German soil albeit by majority decision.

Not a bad fight, not a classic by any means, but fascinating to watch, I think David Haye won this fight, bjt I think it was close and nobody can complain about him getting the decision, but I don't think he quite deserved to get the amount of credit he got, I think he simply did not work for enough of a round in enough rounds, I think he struggled with the size and strength of his opponent, I think he struggled for pace, and he got lazy in many rounds, Valuev did not impress me much, I think it is poor for a 7 foot man to get caught by wild right hands from a 6.25 foot man like that, he didn't seem to want to work much either, I do think he jab was effective in that he put Haye right off unloading, but Haye slipped enough of them for Valuev to be in need of more success, so many of these rounds were very close.

LI'm not at all surprised Valuev retired after this fight, he was old, and he did not seem to want to be in the ring in many of the rounds in this fight, and he was defeated by a boxer who is far from being a natural Heavyweight. I think David Haye is a very overrated boxer, he carries massive punching power as he proved in this fight when he had his seriously big opponent in trouble, but I don't think he takes a punch very well, I think he runs out of gas quite easily which is very bad news for a small Heavyweight, I don't think his technical skills are that good, they're not bad, but they are not great, I saw that in this fight, every time he threw the jab downstairs he was a sitting duck for the right hand counter, he has a habit of leaving himself open, and his offensive ability can be sloppy, dangerous, but sloppy, and to be honest, Nikolai Valuev is far from being the best Heavyweight of all time, very far, he is known to have been legitimately defeated by a very out of date Evander Holyfield, and people say this about many big Heavyweights, but he is a bit of a plodder, so David Haye taking his title by a close, subjective (as my card expresses) decision does not impress me, and I don't think it would have impressed as many pundits and analysts as it did if this fight had taken place 5 years later.

Where did you find the fight? I was going to watch this and all of them were in different languages. I like hearing the commentary and stuff like that.

I can't help you there mate, I watched it without the sound, I think in this case it is better that way, Jim Watt was commentating, I know he was world champion, and he knows what he is talking about, but he can get carried away with his words, Nick Halling can be even worse, the other week, 'Eubank is in big trouble' he wasn't even caught, and when Joshua got minorly buzzed by Dillian Whyte, 'Joshua is in big trouble now'. Anyway sorry mate but I don't think there are any videos of those fight that contains English commentary, would you still like to watch and score it?

Yeah I'll still watch it. If that's the only way I can watch it I'll watch it with the sound off.

Champion97's picture

I'm probably going to watch it later this week.

Champion97's picture

OK mate, it wasn't a great fight, but it was interesting to watch.

Champion97's picture

Oh, and there are at least 2 decent quality videos of the fight on YouTube.

My goodness that was rough in parts.
