More:

Danny Jacobs takes on former stablemate, undefeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko, for the vacant IBF title.

Jacobs comes off two consecutive wins against undefeated opponents, following his close loss to Gennady Golovkin. Derevyanchenko, untested, comes off wins over Tureano Johnson (20-1) and Dashon Johnson (22-22).

Jacobs gets off to a great start, drops Derevyanchenko with a right to the side of the head in round 1.

Derevyanchenko comes back well from the knockdown, is the aggressor, has success, but Jacobs does good work on the back foot.

The fight is close as both fighters continue to have success, and after 12 rounds, not everyone agrees on who has won.

The decision is split, two judges have Jacobs winning by a semi-close margin, and a third judge has Derevyanchenko just edging it.

Danny Jacobs beats Sergiy Derevyanchenko by SD, wins the IBF title.

Champion97's picture

Prediction,

Looking forward to this fight, 160 is a very busy division, Golovkin, Alvarez, Charlo, Saunders, Andrade, Murata, and these two fighters, 8 good world level fighters, they can't all be champions, only half of them can be, maximum. It is good that most of the them are fighting for world titles, we saw Alvarez edge out Golovkin last month, for the WBA and WBC titles, this fight is for the IBF, Saunders vs Andrade was going to be a belter, unfortunately Saunders has proved to be a let down, waste of talent, a disgrace to the sport, but now it's Andrade vs unbeaten Walter Kautondokwa for the WBO. Charlo and Murata are not lined up to fight for world titles yet, but they will get their shots soon if they keep winning.

Jacobs is the proven fighter, he has a good resume, wins over Mora, Ishe Smith, Truax, Quillin, Sulecki, we know how good Jacobs is, against Golovkin, we saw him at his best, he didn't win, but he wasn't far off, he gave Golovkin a lot of problems, won at least 5 rounds, went down once, but was never really in trouble or hurt. We know Jacobs isn't top 5, but we also know he is very good at world level, if he isn't great, which you could argue he is, if he isn't absolute top level, he is everything but that.

Derevyanchenko is the untested fighter here, he has a lot to prove, so far, so good, his record and success so far suggests he is a top level fighter, but you don't prove you are a great fighter until you beat a fighter better than any of Derevyanchenko's previous opponents. Derevyanchenko was a good amateur, 2008 Olympian, fought in the world amateur championships in 2007 and 2009, and competed in a lot of tournaments. As a pro, Derevyanchenko is 12-0, not a lot of fights, but for a veteran amateur, who has learned on the job in his early pro fights, might be enough.

Derevyanchenko dominated and stopped Tureano Johnson (previously only lost to Curtis Stevens, a fight he was doing very well in) over 11-12 rounds, stopped Sam Soliman (only stopped previously against Mundine who he went the distance with after that, went the distance with Sturm, Jermain Taylor, Winky Wright) in 2 rounds, beat current North American champion (who hasn't lost apart from to Derevyanchenko), Kemahl Russell in 5 rounds. Derevyanchenko seems to be a puncher, 83% KOs, he knocked out Vladine Biosse much earlier than Love, Dirrell. Derevyanchenko has been dominant, not occupied at the level he has been fighting at.

Derevyanchenko is 32, not young at all for a fighter in his first meaningful fight, he is older than Jacobs, but he is also much fresher than Jacobs, who has been in tough fights, battled cancer, and may be slowly declining. Jacobs struggled against Sulecki, I thought that was a very close fight, I think it was a combination of Sulecki being good, and Jacobs dipping, but it is possible it wasn't really about Jacobs declining at all, it just seems unlikely he can ever quite match the ability he had against Golovkin, not impossible, because he isn't old, has been dropped 3 times, which is not that many, I only recall seeing him really hurt once in his career, but I think Jacobs is slowly declining now.

The outcome of this fight depends slightly on Jacobs, because he may be slightly declined from the Golovkin fight, might be fading slightly fight by fight, but not definitely, this fight mostly depends on Derevyanchenko, and what you predict depends on whether or not you think Derevyanchenko is a great fighter, if he is, he'll beat Jacobs, if despite being dominant so far, he is maybe an on top fighter, isn't that good, isn't really world level, then he'll lose.

Derevyanchenko's age isn't a problem because 32 or 33 is too old at this level, because we know athletes nowadays, can be around for longer than that, but the problem is, he has no time to play with, he will start declining soon, because when you are his age, you are probably as good as you ever going to be, and as a professional, he lacks experience, Jacobs had a good amateur career as well, has a much better resume, has had a lot more fights, and experience is on his side and then some, Derevyanchenko might be potentially on Jacobs's level, and learn in defeat, he might be better than Jacobs, lose because of a lack of experience, but that's where being over 30 and losing is a problem, because by the time he bounces back, gets another world title shot, he might be 35, older, and really in boxing, when a fighter loses, isn't simply not good enough, but is under 28, has a bit to learn, and hasn't peaked yet, the fighter has a future, and will improve over the next few years, but even if Derevyanchenko benefits from experience, he will not improve, because fighters who do well in their mid thirties are fighters who maintain a lot their ability, decline slowly, but they don't improve.

Both fighters are punchers, Jacobs can be hurt, but he has a good chin, good recuperation, he proved to be durable against Golovkin, Derevyanchenko will get his chin tested in this fight.

I think Jacobs will win this fight, he has the experience, you can only assume Derevyanchenko is great or not great, but I'll give the more experienced, proven fighter who is also younger, the benefit of the doubt. I think this will be a great fight, both will be hurt, but I think Jacobs will stop Derevyanchenko late.

If Derevyanchenko loses this fight, he doesn't have much time to bounce back, but itbwould depend on how he loses. If Derevyanchenko proves me wrong, he proves himself as a great fighter, could well get himself a top 10 ranking. If Jacobs wins this fight, it is more about the title, he could set up a fight against the Golovkin vs Alvarez II winner, and/or the Saunders vs Andrade winner. If Jacobs loses this fight, it might be time to retire.

Good point, done plenty of sparring so they know each other well.

Just added it, http://www.eyeonthering.com/boxing/heather-hardy-vs-shelly-vincent

Derevyanchenko said he much stronger and his Boxing more technical with confidence and he got more ring smarts. Jacobs went on about his experience on a higher level. Lou Dibella is adamant Derevyanchenko is gonna win. They get the same type training and they both with Al Haymon. Derevyanchenko had more amateur success but they both have good pedigrees. Also I know Derevyanchenko would beat Dmitry Pirog easy a man who Knocked Danny Jacobs out so we will see who progresses.

I don't doubt Derevyanchenko is prepared, he can dominate guys like Tureano Johnson, but how will he deal with the versatility of a fighter like Jacobs?, Jacobs kmows what to do when he is hurt, he is a 12 round fighter, can do the fundamentals, but is awakward as well, and it might just come down to experience, but although I think Jacobs wins because he's simply better, I don't know if he can ever match his performance vs Golovkin again.

That's true, but wouldn't Jacobs also beat Pirog in a rematch?, Pirog won because he was better on the night, but is he better altogether?

Can't believe Murata lost to Brant, shows how underrated Braehmer is, he schooled Brant, but did Murata have an off night?, and did Brant just want the win more?, maybe Murata isn't as good as some of us thought.

I could see that Brant more skilled and hungry. Jacobs was a fish out of water vs Pirog he got the business in a way Pirog might have Jacobs number it was injury that was a set back for Pirog not Talent he was very skilled. The thing is will Canelo step up and make Canelo Vs GGG 3 that's the fight to make or Canelo vs Charlo & Boo Boo right now give the winner of this fight to Canelo next especially if its Jacobs. After Rocky Fielding Canelo vs Jacobs.

All good fights, unifications, but Cbarlo is Interim champion for a reason, I think they should fight, and the winner fights Boo Boo or Jacobs, but the problem is politics, Canelo vs Charlo?, does Canelo want that work?, I don't think so.

That 11 fight deal for Canelo Dazn gonna have to have Alvarez in competitive fights for the 365 Million dollars partnership to be profitable they all can't be easy fights first I want Canelo vs Jacobs if we can't have the Golovkin Trilogy. The last two men standing at 60 is Boo Boo and Twin.

Wow! Great fight with high levels of skills from both fighters! Some rounds were difficult to score and it was competative through out. Itcould have gone either way and I wouldn’t have complained but I think Jacobs edged it slightly.

That was a very good fight, both had great tactics, both wanted to win enough to take risks and make a fight of it, the respect between them didn't make them go easy on each other, just shows, stupid stuff, trash talk, doesn't make the fight more entertaining.

Jacobs edged it I thought, even in rounds, but that knockdown was the difference, it was a looping right to the side of the head, Derevyanchenko wasn't that badly hurt, but he was stunned, and it was a clean knockdown. I thought round after round, Derevyanchenko was the aggressor, landed enough shots, out worked Jacobs at times, hurt Jacobs once or twice in the fight, he did have his say in exchanges, but Jacobs got the best of the exchanges, when they opened up, Jacobs nearly always did the more damage and landed the more varied shots, and at times, it was the quality, Derevyanchenko would land, but Jacobs was that clean uppercut, just better work. Very close fight, but I think Jacobs edged it, split decision was good to see.

That's the 3rd unbeaten opponent in a row for Jacobs, he doesn't fight opponents who aren't as good as their names suggest, beat Quillin when he was still unbeaten, Pirog and Golovkin were both undefeated when they beat him. Arias, just a stupid idiot with a big mouth, got whooped, lost every round, but Sulecki and Derevyanchenko, good fighters who Jacobs managed to beat.

Jacobs is declining I think, we saw his absolute best against Quillin, Mora, and most importantly Golovkin, but he is still not far past his prime, has a bit left in the tank, and is still able to beat world level fighters. I don't think Jacobs would beat Charlo, Andrade, Alvarez, Saunders, but I wouldn't be shocked if he beat any of them, and I think he gives all of them problems, he is definitely a threat.
