Prediction.
I think DeGale will win this time, too much experience, I think he'll have learned from last time.

Champion97's picture

Prediction,

This fight is a good idea, some people don't like rematches most of the time, but last time, DeGale was a heavy favourite, Truax fought out of his skin, shocked DeGale, but DeGale didn't hve his belt taken away without a fight, showed a lot of grit, and you could argue that also, as part of the privileges of being the A-side, initially, is that you get the rematch if the worst comes to the worst and you lose, so really, I think DeGale deserves the rematch.

You have to respect Truax for fighting DeGale again, I don't think he had to, and as of now, a fight against DeGale is an option you couldn't blame a fighter for not taking.
Respect to DeGale for not giving up, losing is soul destroying for any athlete, especially in a sport like this, but real fighters can come back from a loss.

DeGale says he fought too soon after the Badou Jack fight, I wouldn't buy it, not under normal circumstances, 11 months is plenty of time between fights, in fact, it is a bit of a break. DeGale's arm injury (serious enough that he needed surgery) I think does make it more complicated, and meant he needed more recovery time, so maybe he would have been better off waiting for longer, but obviously, it must have been a tough decision, you can't hang about in boxing.
I think Truax, last time, was more motivated, determined than anybody realised, I think he had probably watched and studied a lot more of DeGale's fights than vise verse, he may have had a degree of desire, mental strength that he didn't have against the fighters who have beaten him. It was easy to write Truax off, but his losses came at a high level, and losing to Danny Jacobs, going into the last round, no shame in that, but I still think it is hard to say that a 33-34 year old Truax, the Truax that DeGale fought in December, could possibly be better than the Truax that Jacobs fought. For possibly a combination of reasons, the difference in levels didn't show for the most part of the fight as most of us thought it would, and pretty much from the start, Truax looked right on DeGale's level, he applied and sustained eductaed pressure, he was able to keep DeGale in one place for a long time, he had a high output, and he didn't fade, I think for Truax, it was a tactically perfect performance, he was conditioned for 12 rounds, and he had all the motivation he needed.

I think DeGale is an old 32 year old, I think he has made certain fights harder than they needed to be, he had a lot of hard fights in a consecutive row, and against Dirrell, Bute, Medina, Jack, he took punishment in all of these fights, and in each, he probably lost between 4 and 7 rounds, and maybe this is a case of miles on the clock, against Truax, DeGale didn't seem to hold up so well against the punches, in one of the rounds, he was close to being taken out, you have to ask a lot of questions about DeGale, I think he is certainly past his prime, but is he a shot fighter?
I think the outcome of the rematch will come down to a few things.
- the exact reasons why DeGale lost the first fight
- how much potential Truax has in comparison to DeGale's boxing talent
- who wants to win more
I think the last of those 3 might be the most important of the factors, and if I had to guess, I would say Truax might be the mentally stronger, based on what how much he has over achieved, and for DeGale, he's plummeted in the sense that he had asserted himself as a world level fighter, a world champion, and he didn't consider Truax on his level, and now, it is him who has lost something, he's the B-side now, it's his career which is in question, possibly in jeopardy like he never thought it would be. You could argue, that for a couple of reasons, DeGale could want this win more than Truax, but I don't think I agree.

I can see either guy winning, when in doubt, if it's a rematch, I think maybe lean towards whoever won the first fight. I think Truax wins again, but I don't say that with confidence, and I think it will be close, I think another majority or a split decision is more likely than anything else.
My final prediction is Truax by SD, interesting one, but I'm 55/45 on Truax winning again.

Gold's picture

I think Truax will win via late TKO/KO, DeGale seems shot to me and Jack laid out the game plan Truax followed to really trouble DeGale. Perhaps DeGale really was not ready for the fight and was underprepared, so I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong about this one.

Disclosed Purse Info:

DeGale-$300,000
Truax-$300,000

DeGale has fallen a long way, he made $1,550,000 versus Dirrell and $750,000 versus Jack. Good to see Truax is getting paid, certainly his career high.

The wide score was mad, can't really complain about 114-113 either way.

Champion97's picture

I thought DeGale clearly won to be honest, just my perception, commentary might have influenced me. I didn't have it by 7 points, but I had DeGale by a decent margin. Truax did himself proud, he just simply wasn't good enough in the end, no shame in that whatsoever.

Champion97's picture

Good performance from James DeGale, certainly an improvement on the previous fight.
I think Truax did well, but he was at his best last time, that was everything he was capable of, and because of his level of ability, age as well, he could only train as hard as possible, be as determined as last time, but in the end, he couldn't really build on it, whereas DeGale, may have been at some disadvantages last time, but this time, he improved on his first performance against Truax.

One of the key factors in this fight I thought was how DeGale was tying Truax up and smothering his shots whenever he had his back to the ropes, he had to move with the shots, get himself in the right position, but he was able to negate Truax's solid looping right hand, and malling that was so tough for him in the first fight, and once they were out if the clinch, DeGale could get that distance, use the ring capacity, use his feet, and use his speed, skill to get the better of Truax.

I think Truax tried his absolute best, he wanted the win as much as DeGale, but his own pace, his own pressure, it took a lot more our of him than it did DeGale, and in the late rounds, he really faded, and when they were wrestling in close, trying to drag out some punches, Truax just physically couldn't produce the flurries, couldn't rally.

DeGale isn't the fighter he once was, but he is better and declining more slowly than the November fight suggested, he has a bit left in the tank, and now, he is right back in the mix at 168.
