Pick'em fight IMO. Saunders is the superior boxer, but Lemieux is never out of a fight because of his freakish power in both hands.

Excited for this one.

Champion97's picture

Prediction,

Rooting for Lemieux, Saunders is a piece of garbage, good fighter though, granted, and I think he'll win this one wide, Lemieux, I don't think is a good boxer at this level, nkt a good technical boxer anyway, but he isn't terrible outside of power, and he might just be the heaviest handed middleweight on the planet, so he must be considered a threat, he is dangerous, he can do some damage, so Saunders could find himself on his back if he makes a real error, I just think he'll know how not to make any serious mistakes, and if he makes it about boxing skill, about defence, reflexes, a tentative fight, this could be a very one sided one, also, I think Lemieux is similar to Khurtside, who Saunders was scheduled to face for July, but was banned for racketeering, so that could be an advantage for Saunders.
I don't think Saunders can stop Lemieux, he doesn't have a lot of power, and he doesn't have it in the tank to put some serious volume, some accumulation of punches on an opponent, but I don't see him struggling to win every one of the first 6 rounds, and if losing the second half, losing it by 4-2, and more likely not to lose even that amount.

Lemieux needs to take advantage of the late rounds, Saunders has never won round 12, he usually struggles after 10, he does fade in fights, he took some heavy leather from Chris Eubank Jr late in their fight, and Lemieux is a much harder hitter than Eubank, so if Saunders is really tired late on, and Lemieux can really rally, it could be very painful for Saunders. I think if Lemieux catches Saunders, properly, with a clean, well timed shot, flush, he can destory him, but it is so hard to get a clean shot on Saunders, I don't think Lemieux will have any real success in the first half of the fight, and I would struggle not to write him off if Saunders was more busy, powerful, had better stamina, speed, but Saunders is not Golovkin, Canelo, Jacobs, he is a class below, and because Saunders can't do the 12 very well, and he does gas, the fight is interesting, and one of the important questions we should ask, is how much easier will Saunders be for Lemieux to catch clean, when he is physically drained?

I think Saunders will win by at least 4 points, maybe up to 8, so a wide win, but no walk in the park, and this fight is a risk, it would be great to see it backfire, I don't expect Lemieux to have any chance of winning a decision, but it is possible he can knock Saunders out cold, I don't predict it, but it would be good to see. If Saunders wins this as I think he will, I hope he has the balls to fight Jacobs, Charlo, he can't beat these guys, he should not be a world champion, he doesn't make the top 5 in the division, I expect him to beat Lemieux because he is a puncher and not much more than that at all, but I think, quite rightly, when he stops picking on the Akavovs and Monroes of the boxing world, and fights a really good fighter at this level, the WBO belt will be won by, at least, a top 5 fighter, whether it is Murata, Jacobs, Charlo, I think they all beat him, and Jacobs gives him an absolute thrashing.

albertocastany's picture

Well, not exactly surprised, but I was expecting a bit more from Lemieux.

Champion97's picture

Saunders boxed very well it has to be said, credit to him, I don't think he deserves support from the public, I don't think he is a nice guy, but he is a very good boxer indeed, and this was a good performance.

I don't think we can read too much into this performance, Lemieux, a massive puncher, strong, been at a high level, so Saunders does deserve a lot of credit, particularly establishing himself as the boss offensively, that was impresssive, landing with variety, but Lemieux, for all his power, strength, his foot speed is very poor, he is not hard to prepare for, defensively, he's limited, to put it lightly, his output, hand speed, overall boxing skill, below optimum, and tonight, he was very poor, I don't whether he underestimated Saunders, whether he's gone downhill, but one thing I can say, is that while Saunders is better than all the people who have strong, understandable dislike for him say he is, he is not as good as Boxnation say he is either, he does have great skills, he's a counter puncher, how boring his performance was, not finishing so well, as he never does, that is no valid critique, on the other hand, I think he was definitely made to look better tonight than he actually is, and I think was one of Lemieux's poorer performances.

My opinion on Saunders as a fighter is higher after this display of boxing skills, because he boxed very well, against no bum, and could have won himself a shutout, always an achievement, but I still don't think he would come close to beating Canelo, Golovkin, Jacobs, Charlo, and I'd give Murata an edge over him, that's a 50/50 fight in my opinion, if he gets any of these opportunities, and wins any of these fights, then I'll take my hat off to him.

In particular, I think it was his variety, Saunders, his maturity, 3 minute per round focus, which was impressive, the precision from him as well, so I think, offensively, Saunders proved a lot, defensively, pace wise, not particularly impressive or unimpressive, because Lemieux's feet were so slow, and he couldn't stop Saunders taking rests whenever it suited him, I think these are some of the differences between fighting Lemieux, and fighting some of the top 5 ag 160, however, it's hard to write him off completely, never count out a counter puncher, he's slick, experienced, and he's a good, overall technical fighter, got great ring IQ, if he thinks he can beat some of the top fighters, good luck to him, he might be able to get Golovkin, Jacobs at the right time, whether or not that will be enough, is some question, but I think that's why he wants to fight Golovkin, not Canelo.

Saunders could be a good role model for young fighters if he sorted himself out a bit, showed more class, respect, he is a good fighter, but he can't expect people to support for him, and not enjoy the thought of seeing him lose, when he acts like a bully, he should take a leaf out of Golovkin's book. I hope Saunders faces Charlo, Jacobs, Murata, Andrade next, assuming Golovkin vs Canelo II happens next year, because while it is good beating Lemieux, Monroe, Lee, they aren't major fights, and a 2 year world champion should be in major fights. Based on this performance, he is no easy opponent for anyone, but does not beat any of the top 5 middleweights, that's an opinion many will disagree with, what we can all agree on, is that the fights which answer the questions, should happen.

Overall, best performance of Saunders's career so far.

Boxing Purist's picture

What a masterclass from BJS, even Lampley was saying by the 6th session GGG might want to avoid a fight with Billy Joe, and this is from one of Triple G's biggest cheerleaders.

Gold's picture

Neither Canelo or Golovkin will avoid Saunders, especially because it would be for the undisputed championship. Lemieux was perfect for BJS, a limited puncher who marches forward in a straight line, can't cut off the ring, and gasses early in fights. Saunders just moved and boxed Lemieux easily, no chance he can do that versus Canelo or Golovkin, especially Golovkin. Canelo has improved a lot, especially his foot speed, since Lara but even versus Lara he was able to be effective/win rounds and Lara is a surely a lot more complete of a boxer than Saunders is. Both Canelo and Golovkin would be the best boxers Saunders has faced by a wide margin, and Golovkin would be perfect to negate Saunders style. Saunders doesn't have the power to get Golovkin's respect if Golovkin can drive through Canelo's counters. Golovkin is great at cutting off the ring, he would work the body and expose BJS's gas tank again to get a late TKO or wide decision.
