Undefeated but unknown Jeff Horn pulls off a monumental upset on his home turf of Australia when he captures the WBO Welterweight Championship with a controversial but unanimous decision over Manny Pacquiao. Horn comes to fight, taking the first round by force and making many rounds close through the first half of the bout. In the sixth, a clash of heads opens a cut on the top of Pacquiao's head before Horn stuns him with a right hand. Another clash of heads sees Pacquiao cut over the left eye, causing blood to pour over his face. In the ninth, Pacquiao unloads on Horn, lighting him up with power shots for half the round and bloodying his face, but the challenger survives. Horn makes a fight of it in the twelfth before the judges award him the bout.

Do we have any native Australians here at EOTR? If so could you tell us what the excitement level for this fight is over there? I've read over 50,000 tickets have been sold so far.

Champion97's picture

Prediction,

I think this is a good match up, not great, but good, and as an Australian event, it is massive.

This is something new for Manny Pacquiao, outside of Asia, outside of America, he is travelling a long way to face an unbeaten opponent.

This is a great opportunity for Jeff Horn, in his home country, it will be his night, his chance to impress on the big stage, fighting a boxing legend, one of the best of his era, and it will be interesting to see how he deals with the pressure.

I think Pacquiao will win this fight, and he will dominate, I believe, on paper, he will do to Horn what Khan did to Molina, I don't think it will be quite as one sided as that fight was, I think Horn will certainly hit Pacquiao more than Molina hit Khan, but I think Pacquiao will win every round to score a decisive 100-90 shut out, and then Horn's trainer will retire him from the fight before the championship rounds.

I still don't believe Manny Pacquiao is anywhere near as good as he was 3-4 years ago, and I don't thimk he makes the top 5 in his division.

Champion97's picture

Are you Australian?

Nope. Born in & living in New York. Never been outside the US.

Champion97's picture

That's awesome, I'm British, but I love the US, well, I've never been, but it looks awesome, and I would love to live there one day, I know 0 people who don't think New York City is great, and I've heard the rest of the state is great too.

I'm sorry you're fights are so long, they are next yo be uploaded, I promise, and they won't be much longer!

albertocastany's picture

Still can't make my mind on this fight. Will watch without any particular expectations. Just enjoy the good manny while you can.

rorschach's picture

Main event time.

albertocastany's picture

Well...it looks like a clear win for Pacquiao. HOwever, it's a bit unsettling to have watched this version of Manny. He looked dominant, but still different to what we have been used to see from him. Instead of being the barging offensive machine, he was rather more patient and stationary, while counterpunching with accuracy. Still good, but felt odd.

albertocastany's picture

Whoa....what a robbery...

Wow...Horn was a workhorse out there, but I was shocked by the 117-111 -- I thought that had to have been for Manny Pacquiao.

It almost feels like they flipped the scorecards around. Like -- oops we called it for the wrong guy.

Timothy Bradley didn't get to talk much, but I thought he was often more insightful than Atlas.

Champion97's picture

That's because he has actually experienced big fights himself, the boxer who is working as analyst should always be looked to for knowledge before the guy who has never boxed.

BIGLEFTHOOK's picture

boxnation coverage pisses me off , espns cameras record motion much better i notice can see whats landing and in this fight i needed to see it somewhere else but boxnation and i watched it on another channel and pacquiao landed cleaner shots

Horn was game and I commend him for that but he didn't win the fight. Just because you show heart and do better than what you were expected to do doesn't mean you won the fight. It was excellent fight but Pacquiao clearly landed the more precise punches in this fight. He was more accurate as well. Horn's face clearly showed that. Great action-packed fight for sure but a horrible decision. I haven't heard of any of the 3 judges before, not sure if they have any experience in this caliber of a fight before and it showed. Flip the scorecards around and they got it right. 117-111 for Horn is just horrendous, no logical way to come up with 9 rounds for him. Again, excellent fight, bloody action-packed but a true head-scratcher of a decision. Pretty quick to setup the rematch in the ring immediately after the fight seems a bit fishy. What boxing needed was the awesome free card that was put on tonight, a real treat, not another horrible decision to take away from what was a great great fight.

"What boxing needed was the awesome free card that was put on tonight, a real treat, not another horrible decision to take away from what was a great great fight."

The first part is so true. I grew up and really got into boxing in the early 90s. You had ESPN and USA offering televising fights each week. Throughout the year, the really "free" major networks offered cards especially over the summer. That is to say nothing of fights at the Forum or other smaller cable offerings.

It's one reason I've tried not to be down on PBC when it came out even if podcasts I listened to attacked it. I am super excited for the August fights. Hopefully, those can steer clear of major controversies!

rorschach's picture

I was at work so I really didn't get to watch intently, I'm going to watch it again now that's I'm home and re-score it.

rorschach's picture

Already got a round change, I originally scored the 1st round for Horn and that holds. But round 2 which I only got to see the last half of because I was bust at work I originally scored for Pac but looks to me to be a clear Horn round. So instead of even after 2 I now have it 20-18 Horn after 2.

rorschach's picture

Another round change, round 3 I originally had for Pac, but Horn was still the effective aggressor and landing well. Manny landed well also, but I thought Horn yet again controlled the round. 30-27 Horn.

rorschach's picture

Round 4 was Pac. 39-37 Horn.

rorschach's picture

Another switch round 6 was Horn's round, so it's 4-2 58-56 Horn after 6.

rorschach's picture

Just finished it again paying full attention, while not the best video quality a lot of it was to zoomed in I had Horn winning 7-5. But I mean a lot of fighters like Lennox Lewis to name one thought this was a awful decision according to his twitter.

Pacquiao made the fight harder.

Horn put up a good effort.

The betting odds gave Horn a shot.

Steven A. Smith is the worst commentator an in Boxing history.

Boxing analyst jobs should be for Boxing Folks.

The Best performance of the night came from Michael Buffer.

Other sporting events have bad decisions.

Horn got a Hometown gift.

Like it or not fight fans Jeff Horn is now a name in Boxing.

Can't wait for the rematch.

It was the toughest fight of Horns career not Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao handed the bad decision classy.

Jeff Horn after the fight announced his wife is pregnant with there first child.

Horn lucky he didn't get stopped.

Australia has good atmosphere for Boxing the crowd was pumping.

The rematch should be in the Philippines.

ESPN and main stream news outlets wants Boxing to have controversial decisions so they can minimalize a sport most of there on air talent don't know Boxing at all.

TalesFromTheCrypt's picture

Just finished watching both broadcasts. Atlas seemed to give Pac lots of credit, while Box Nation gave Pac none. I still stand by a comfortable Pac margin of victory. Both times I had it 8-4 Pac. Horn fought a great fight and was able to keep up his aggression for the fight, but Pac was definitely landing the cleaner and harder shots, especially to the face. Horn can now use this fight with Pac to earn bigger paydays in the future. All in all- great fight, horrible decision.

Left Eye's picture

This was a very scrappy and messy fight.

Pacquiao won, but it was closer than I thought it would be.

That 117 - 111 card in favor of Horn is farcical though; reminds me of that judge who scored Mayweather vs Canelo a draw.

It was, and I agree. The 117-111 scorecard is very suspicious and smells of something. No way in hell did Horn win 9 rounds. I had the Mayweather-Canelo fight 9-3 for May, or something like that, but I thought some of the rounds were pretty close.

And I agree, Steven A. Smith is a horrible commentator when it comes to boxing. He should stick to basketball, where he actually does a very good job. Max Kellerman should have had his gig tonight.

No point in debating the result. All I can think is that Jeff Horn will be getting called out by other welterweights in no time. After what Horn showed, he is going to be seen as a high reward low risk opponent.

Horn won, and he won legitimately, better man on the night, plain and simple, just hold your hands up man, come on, just be honest, you got it wrong, we got it right, Jeff Horn won.
