Titles at Stake:
WBA, IBF, WBO heavyweight world champion, boxing's most popular competitor, the UK's most popular athlete, Anthony Joshua, defends his titles against veteran challenger, Alexander Povetkin, at Wembley arena, the venue which held possibly the best heavyweight fight of this century, which was Joshua's victory over Wladimir Klitschko, the previous champion who handed Povetkin his only career loss.
Joshua starts off, mobile, tries to establish his jab, looks sharp, but Povetkin gives the home fans a scare as he lands a clean combination at the end of round 1, landing a left hook which hurts Joshua. Joshua, with a very bloody nose, has work to do, and in the following rounds, Povetkin is aggressive, lands a few clean power shots, but Joshua takes them well, and in the early-mid rounds, Joshua, for the most part, out working Povetkin, landing more punches, as he lands his jab cleanly and regularly, unexpectedly, using the jab to the body more than any other weapon.
In round 7, Joshua lands a clean right hand down the middle, a shot Povetkin does not see coming, Joshua does not let him off the hook, goes on the attack, lands a devastating left hook which rocks Povetkin, follows it up with a solid right hand to knock the Russian off his shaky legs, Povetkin, legless, just about manages to drag himself up, needing the ropes for support, nearly falling out of the ring, referee Steve Gray gives him a chance, but seconds later, he is down again after Joshua too easily knocks him over, at this point, the referee, and Povetkin's corner, stop it simultaneously.
Joshua successfully defends his titles, stops Povetkin in 7 rounds.
After the fight, Joshua is confident there is no current mandatory, and he can fight whoever the fans want him to fight.
After 6 rounds, at the time of the stoppage, Joshua was ahead on all the scorecards.
