Prediction,

This is a great test for Hunter, it's his 7th fight since moving up, 2nd smallest opponent, 2nd oldest as well, but also by far the toughest in my opinion, Povetkin is very good, has good wins, dominated a lot of decent fighters, he's only lost to unified champions, and although he was stopped against Joshua, he earned that shot, he had success in the fight, he proved he wasn't shot in his last fight, beat Hughie Fury. I think Hunter is top 5 at heavyweight, very underrated, and he wins this fight.

Povetkin hits very hard, he is deceptively skilful, doesn't look like a great technical fighter in the ring, but he is so effective. Povetkin is an ambush fighter, he doesn't set up his shots, isn't the best counter puncher, he jumps in with the lead left hook, sometimes doubles that shot, but he is patient, times his attacks, it's very hard for his opponent to anticipate his offence, he is very awkward. Povetkin is small, but he is strong, he hits very hard, is a great inside fighter, attacks the body, he doesn't have the a typical Eastern European style or top level amateur style, despite being a well schooled Russian, and a 2 time Olympic gold medallist.

Hunter was briefly hurt against Kuzmin, he took a beating against Usyk, his chin is questionable, he can't afford mistakes, because Povetkin can hurt him, and it is easy to underestimate Povetkin's ability to do damage even when it seems like he's been kept out of his punching range. Povetkin doesn't have many weaknesses, so Hunter won't have a lot to take advantage of in this fight. Povetkin is great at smothering his opponent's punches, disallowing him from working, whilst not smothering his own shots.

Povetkin is 40, he started slowly against Fury, looked ponderous in the early rounds, I didn't agree with the wide cards in that fight. I think Hunter has the best movement at heavyweight apart from Tyson Fury, that will be a big problem for Povetkin, because he will struggle to get into range, Hunter is consistent with his movement he uses the ring well for 12 rounds, so Povetkin can't just wait for Hunter to stop moving, and easily time his attacks like against Hughie.

Hunter has said he is going for the KO, and it's always a bad thing mentally, for a fighter think push for the KO rather than stick to the game plan. I think this will be Hunter's toughest fight since Usyk, but it will also be his best win. Povetkin is definitely past his best, but he is probably not shot, if he wins this, he puts himself in a position for another title shot, if he loses, however he loses, I think he should retire.

I think Hunter wins a fairly wide UD.

MattDixon's picture

I think povetkin Is the favourite on this fight, but I dont think he should be. In his last fight povetkin went the distance with hughie fury in a close fight that I believe he lost 7-5. Povetkin didnt have the same accuracy and precision he once had back in the days of his WBA regular champion run. His chin is still intact and his speed is still good for a heavyweight but age is having an effect on him.

Hunter on the other hand had an absolutely incredible performance againest dangerous Russian knockout artist Sergey kuzmin last time out who was arguably top 15/20 (knocked out david price and beat Joey dawjecko by MD). Hunter gave him a boxing lesson winning 11-1 one my scorecard and getting a significant knockdown in round 5. Hunters only loss is to oleksandr usyk where he won a few rounds against a p4p top 5 and went the distance with him. Other big wins in his career include martin bakole and alexander ustinov who he both stopped who were good top 50 opponents.

Besides this I think povetkin will have success in short bursts of the fight, closing the distance with looping right hands and left hooks, but will come too little to steal many rounds. Povetkins problem is that he doesnt use a jab to set anything up

I think hunter wins by MD 116-112 114-114 and 117-111, no knockdowns by either fighters

PhillyPhan69's picture

Bad decision in my mind. Hunter won this pretty clearly IMO 117-11

Champion97's picture

I agree PhillyPhan.

MattDixon's picture

Incredible fight. I had a draw. 8 and 2 could've gone either way. Commentary in later rounds were bullshit. Impressed by both fighters

Champion97's picture

I thought the commentary was ok, Bellew might have exaggerated how much of a bad way Povetkin was in, in the late rounds, but apart from that, I thought it was fine.

A draw was fair. Mad props to the judges for scoring this correctly

Champion97's picture

I thought Hunter got robbed, the Russian judge was biased, all 3 should have been neutral, a USA judge doesn't even it out because USA judges have been less biased for their own in recent years, Canelo, a Mexican, got ridiculous cards from USA judges from 2012-17, for promotional reasons. I thought Hunter won fairly wide, I can see it being close, but I thought Hunter won clearly.

Hunter started great, but as the fight went on, he fought the wrong fight, and aside from his tactics, Povetkin was still able to get the better of him on the inside, hurt him at least once, and Hunter wasn't able to keep the fight on the outside for enough of the fight to win as convincingly as I expected.
