Alexander Povetkin vs. Marco Huck
Fight Notes: In what will probably go down as the most entertaining heavyweight fight of the year--at least at the highest level--Alexander Povetkin survived an extremely difficult defense of his WBA title against long-time cruiserweight titlist Marco Huck. Many felt the 20+ lb. weight differential would prevent Huck from deploying his usual bullying tactics, but this was not the case at all, as he was able to rush and lunge at Povetkin repeatedly, exploiting the Russian's hideous balance and footwork. For his part, Povetkin landed the cleaner, sharper combinations throughout, and, despite some controversy at the end, walked away with a really tough but deserved majority decision. |

Re: Alexander Povetkin vs. Marco Huck
Great back-and-forth fight that could've gone either way. Huck has never been technically polished but he uses his strenghts well and has a handful of shadow-zone, borderline dirty tricks in his arsenal. This fight was no exception, Huck was constantly pushing Povetkin down, leaning on him and putting his weight on him. Huck's roughhouse tactics partially worked, in the middle rounds Povetkin appeared to be tired, by the end of the fight his gas tank was almost empty. To Povetkin's credit, he showed tremendous will, scoring some of the later rounds through workrate despite being clearly exhausted, one of the reasons why I considered him an elite fighter is that he showed he had the tools in his arsenal to scrap the victory even when the fight isn't going his way. Don't think the scorecards were controversial (although 116-112 is probably too wide), Huck surely looked more active and fresh but was missing quite often.
